Miles Headshot.jpg

Biography

Miles was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. He attended the University of Richmond from 2005 – 2009 where he majored in Chemistry and Spanish and conducted four years of research with Prof. C. Wade Downey, with whom he developed synthetic methods for C–C bond forming reactions mediated by trimethylsilyl triflate. Following college, Miles attended UC Berkeley where he earned a Ph.D. (2014) for his studies on gold-heteroatom bonds and their reactivity under Profs. F. Dean Toste and Robert G. Bergman. From 2014 to 2016, Miles conducted a mechanistic study on photoinduced copper-mediated cross-coupling as an NIH NRSA Post-Doctoral Fellow at Caltech with Prof. Jonas C. Peters and in collaboration with Prof. Gregory C. Fu. In 2016, Miles returned to the University of Richmond to teach undergraduates the joys of synthetic chemistry (organic, inorganic, and organometallic) and train them to be well-rounded scientists.
